Facebook I haven’t been updating my blog much lately. Besides having very busy times at the office and taking a trip down south, I have been spending the little online time I have left on Facebook. With first my New York friends getting on there, now my UK friends have also discovered the online community site and pretty much everyone I know is on it. And these are not the internet savvy bloggers and/or IT people. I even got contacted by a girl from Norway that I met while studying in Barcelona over 10 years ago.

I can’t find that many Belgian people I know on facebook. Ine, Michel, Bart and recently Joke are the ones I could find. I also found a Pieter Baert on there, but it’s not this one. It seems like the Facebook wave still has to hit Belgium, although there are 6.953 people in the Belgium network. Or maybe it still has to hit the Belgian blogosphere… Mmmm… or is this one of those things that all the "normal" people digg, but the blogosphere hates??

Are you on Facebook?

I’m lying here on the sofa, exhausted from last night (party, more on that later) and SkyMovies is broadcasting a special on the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Filmfestival. During the next weeks, one of their channels will be showing all the films that won a Palme D’Or. Tonight, it’s l’Enfant.

TanghiI had an amazing 3 days at the Festival earlier this week. After a couple of hours standing in line for the accreditation (thanks again, Screenvision), everything was just wonderful. Some of the highlights:
– 28 degrees Celcius (it was raining all day in London on the day before I left, so this was definitely a big highlight)
Persepolis. A wonderful animation movie that actually made me cry twice. De Standaard seems to agree with me, my company on the other hand fell asleep during the film… de gustibus et coloris etc…
Tanghi Argentini, the best short film I saw during the couple of hours I spent in one of the short film booths in the short film corner. Try to see this. It’s a beautiful script and really great acting (Dirk van Dijck and Koen Van Impe). Oh yes, It’s a Belgian film by Guido Thys.
– Straight8 screening in the Kodak pavilion. Some really cool films like Sticks and Balls, Everything but… and The Other Half.
– Partying after the Straight8 screening (no other comments).
– Dressing up "red carpet" style (yes, yes, tuxedo, evening dress etc…) and seeing the premiere of Mister Lonely (weird film, good moments, sometimes very funny but too long).
– Another highlight: the hotel within walking distance of the Palais. And I found it the week before the festival. And not even exepnsive. Trust me, this is worth a lot! Yes, very very lucky.

Unfortunately no spotting of Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Leonardo or any others. Although this crew sat in the bar of the Martinez hotel with Quentin Tarrantino and Roman Polanski. But that was the day before I arrived… Ah well, something to maybe look forward to next year. Selection of pictures of the three days here.

De volgende drie dagen verdwijn ik hier even en zal ik samen met (hopelijk) interessant volk over de Croisette paraderen 🙂 Ongetwijfeld zullen de straffe verhalen en coole foto’s volgen later deze week.

Bafta20logo_2 I just watched the BAFTAs on BBC. The television ones… You can find the results here. And the best and worst dressed on the red carpet here. But what awesome music they used! I heard The Kaiser Chiefs, The Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party… oh… and Take That at the very end.

Honestly, people should just not allow me anywhere near a shoe store anymore. I’m hopelessly addicted…

When I first met him, he completely ignored me the entire evening while his friends kept saying how incredible awesome and cool he was. "He plays poker to finance his films," was probably the most heard sentence during that evening in the Charterhouse bar back in October. And I have to admit, that does sound incredibly sexy. (Scenes from Brad Pitt and George Clooney from Ocean’s 11 start flashing through my head right now…)

Well, I did get to speak to him a bit since and he told me about his first shortfilm Breaker, his participation in Straight8 and his first feature that he is working on.
Straight8 is (quoting Nick) "the most hardcore back to basics film comp out there. They give you one cartridge of super8 to make a film on, you shoot everything in camera and submit it blind (no editing), with a soundtrack that you hope syncs up."

The best 10 films from the Straight8 competition get a screening in Cannes during the filmfestival (also the first time the film makers see their actual result). Nick participated the last 3 times. Both his first and second film were selected for Cannes and he got a call last week that his third film for this year’s selection won the competition! So again: Cannes! Go Nick!

Check out his first Straigt8 film, Earth to Earth, on the BBC film network site. Have a look at it and rate it. (That does require registration, but it takes less than 2 minutes)

Here’s a production shot from that first film and below you can find the full second film:

Got, Got, Need! – Awesome straight8 film

Jaja, om het in de woorden van andere internetgoden te zeggen: Hij kan mij krijgen…
