Remember when I went to the Cannes filmfestival earlier this year? Well, besides parading on the Croisette, I mostly went because N. had won the Straight8 film competition with his film "The Other Half" and it was shown in the Kodak pavilion at the festival.
Straight8 is a competition where you get one Super8 cartridge of film and you have to hand in the same one (they write down the serial numbers) un-processed, so blind. No post-production or editing possibilities, just in-camera. You hand in a cd with the audio and kind of hope it matches.
The 10 best ones are shown in Cannes and that’s also the first time the film makers see their own film (imagine the nerves in that room). The BBC did a short documentary on the competition.
This year was the third time he entered. His first two films are here and here.
For this year, N. wanted to do a split screen one and to show you how they did it (without cheating), here’s part 1 of "the making off":
